Unique & Unbelievable 1880 Swedish Cobblers Drawers/DeskHaberdashery **SOLD**
This piece reminds us why we love what we do!
Obtained from a recent excursion around Europe, this is a unique piece of history (at least in all the number of years I have been sourcing treasures around Europe I have never come across anything like this).
Made in the 1880-90’s this was a be-spoke dovetailed set of drawers made for a cobbler. All original, all made from pine (no ply bottoms to the drawers), The patina and aged colour of the pine is a dream. All I have done is cleaned it up, sanded the inside and finished with shellac/wax. The general look is to die for. It could easily be used as a bedroom unit (imagine a large 1900’s French mirror behind it), it could fit into a rustic bathroom or living room space perfectly.
The drawers would make a superb talking piece in a boutique or be-spoke shop: It has strong hinges to lift the top to reveal a shallow tray/work bench. This is where the cobbler would work on shoes/boots etc. There are still remains of stain/dye which would have been criminal to sand away, so it has been left as is. The drawers are dovetailed front and back and the middle drawer has a leather pull from inside. The drawers open from the back as well as the front. In other words, the drawers work both ways.
I don’t know of a piece that is as cool, unique and timeless! I could quite easily see this at over a thousand pounds, given its history...put, it this way: what’s you’re chances of ever coming across another one?
